Abstract
Introduction: Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is essential for bone health and calcium regulation. Worldwide, nearly one billion people are estimated to be deficient in vitamin D, making it an important public health concern. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge of vitamin D among first-year undergraduate medical students at N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Department of Biochemistry. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in May - June 2025 at N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Department of Biochemistry. The participants included first-year undergraduate medical students. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee. Data were collected using a structured, self-prepared multiple-choice questionnaire distributed through Google Forms. A convenient sampling technique was applied, and responses were analyzed using SPSS software, version 20. Results: A total of 350 students took part in the study. Among them, 55 (16%) demonstrated good knowledge, 235 (67%) had average knowledge, and 60 (17%) showed poor knowledge of vitamin D. The participants included 180 (51%) MBBS students, 82 (23%) BDS students, 70 (20%) BPTH students, and 68 (19%) Nursing students. Conclusions: First-year undergraduate students at N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Department of Biochemistry demonstrated a generally satisfactory level of knowledge about vitamin D. Most students across all three courses showed average knowledge, similar to findings reported in comparable studies.
