Securing Healthcare Data Through Blockchain Technology and Smart Contracts for Enhanced Interoperability and Integrity
K.Prasadh , R.Vijay , Arun Shalin LV
Abstract
Blockchain is transforming healthcare by introducing a decentralized framework that ensures greater trust and transparency in data exchange. Unlike centralized Electronic Health Records (EHRs), blockchain offers tamper-resistant data storage, reducing risks of unauthorized access or modification. This study investigates the role of smart contracts, especially within the Cardano ecosystem, in managing healthcare information securely. Smart contracts automate access controls and permissions, allowing patients to retain ownership and authority over their medical data. Cardano’s blockchain infrastructure facilitates privacy-preserving operations while maintaining interoperability across different health information systems. Healthcare institutions benefit from a permissionless yet secure architecture that supports compliance with international data governance standards. Blockchain-based systems eliminate the need for intermediaries, streamlining administrative tasks and improving record accuracy. This decentralization improves the traceability and auditability of medical interventions and decisions across the patient lifecycle. By deploying intelligent approximations of medical data, smart contracts enhance real-time communication between patients and providers. A major advantage of blockchain in healthcare lies in its ability to verify data authenticity instantly. Through the use of distributed ledgers, medical histories become immutable and universally accessible to authorized stakeholders. Enhanced data integrity also reduces the probability of medical errors due to incomplete or outdated records. The study emphasizes how blockchain can improve healthcare delivery, reduce overhead, and facilitate personalized treatment approaches. Smart contract-enabled platforms present a scalable solution for future-ready health information ecosystems. This work highlights the practical and technological benefits of integrating blockchain in modern healthcare infrastructures.
