Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the principal cause of cardiovascular diseases. Among the cardiovascular diseases coronary artery disease is most common in diabetic patients. The left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is the early sign of coronary artery disease indicating subtle heart muscle impairment from ischemia. There are many studies documenting that the prevalence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in diabetic patients is high. According to some studies a high prevalence of diastolic dysfunction in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic individuals of about 70- 80%. It increases with risk factors like older age, longer diabetic duration and poor glycemic control. LVDD is considered a significant pre-clinical marker of diabetic cardiomyopathy. As the number of people with diabetes around the world is predicted to increase from 634 million by 2040, the outlook for cardiovascular disease becomes even more alarming. This Systematic review emphasizes the prevalence of LVDD in diabetes mellitus patients which may help the physicians to prevent, manage the complications and prognosis of the disease in diabetic patients.
