Abstract
Background: Effective airway management is crucial for the success of laparoscopic abdominal surgeries. This randomized controlled trial compares the performance of two supraglottic airway devices, the Baska Mask and the LMA Gastro Airway, in terms of oropharyngeal seal pressure, ease of insertion, and postoperative complications. Methods: A total of 100 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic abdominal surgeries were randomly assigned to receive either the Baska Mask or the LMA Gastro Airway. Primary outcomes measured included oropharyngeal seal pressure and ease of insertion. Secondary outcomes focused on the incidence of postoperative complications such as nausea, vomiting, lip damage, dysphonia, and dysphagia. Data were analyzed using t-tests for continuous variables and chi-squared tests for categorical variables. Results: The LMA Gastro Airway showed a significantly higher mean oropharyngeal seal pressure (28.9 cm H2O) compared to the Baska Mask (27.3 cm H2O) with a p-value of 0.035. It was also inserted more quickly, with a mean time of 21.8 seconds versus 23.4 seconds for the Baska Mask (p = 0.001). There were no significant differences in the incidence of postoperative complications between the two devices. Conclusion: The LMA Gastro Airway demonstrated superior oropharyngeal seal pressures and was easier to insert than the Baska Mask. Both devices showed similar safety profiles with respect to postoperative complications. These findings suggest that the LMA Gastro may be more advantageous for use in laparoscopic abdominal surgeries, though both devices remain viable options for effective airway management.
