Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Evaluation of Hepatic Steatosis with In-Phase and Out-Of-Phase MR Imaging
Sameh Abokoura
Abstract
Background Because of its prevalence, NAFLD is having a great concern these days. It was previously diagnosed using a liver biopsy, which is an invasive procedure; thus, a noninvasive method of diagnosis was required. To fulfill this role, the MRI IP OP technique was introduced. Aim The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the MRI in phase and out of phase (IP OP) technique in diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Patients and methods MRI of the liver with IP OP technique was performed on 40 asymptomatic patients with a clinical diagnosis of NAFLD, showing diffuse hyper echogenicity of the liver by the ultrasound, from January 2020 to September 2020. A manually placed region of interest and an equation was used to determine the grades of steatosis. Results One patient (male pateint) had minimal steatosis, 18 patients (11 female and 7 male patients) had mild steatosis, 19 patients (14 female and 5 male patients) had moderate steatosis, and two patients (one female and one male patients) had severe steatosis. Conclusion Liver MRI with the IP OP technique can be used rapidly and quantitatively in estimating the liver fat content (LFC) in patients with NAFLD.
