Morphometric Study of proximal End of the Tibia and its Clinical Importance

Abstract
Introduction: Tibia is the second largest as well as longest bone situated on the medial side of the body. The upper end of the tibia consists of two parts lateral and medial condyles and between condyles there is intercondylar area which articulate with corresponding condyles of femur and form the knee joint. Accurate morphometric parameters, condylar and intercondylar area of right and left side is very important to make design of total knee joint prosthesis and reduces the postoperative complications. Material and Methods: Study was conducted on 100 dry human tibia from Department of Anatomy in MGM Medical College, Nerul Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra India. Measurement of medial and lateral condyles, intercondylar area are recorded with the use of digital Vernier calliper with least count of 0.01 mm. and data were tabulated. Result: All measurement were found to be statistically significant when compared with right and left side. Anteroposterior diameter were found to be greater than transverse diameter for both medical and lateral condyle and Anteroposterior diameter and transverse diameter were greater in medial condyle than in lateral condyle. Conclusion: The present study will enhance the morphometric parameters for orthopaedic surgeons for compartmental knee arthoplasty as well as complete knee arthoplasty in Indian population thus preventing from post-operative complication.
