Iodine Deficiency Disorder in 05-15 Years of Age in Respondent of Muzaffapur, Bihar: Prospective Study

Abstract
Background Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) constitute the single largest cause of preventable brain damage worldwide. Majority of consequences of IDD are invisible and irreversible, but at the same time these are preventable. Methods The current non- interventional, community based, field survey, prospective study was conducted in Kanti Block, Muzaffarpur, from February 10, 2025 to May 10, 2025 on respondent (Children- 05-15 years of age). The systematic random sampling method was used to selected 300 samples for study. Percentage, Proportion, Chi-square test, ‘P’ value were performed. Results Although no any case of goitre was found, only 87% of responded (05-15 Years of age) of kanti block were consuming adequately iodized salt, female children, 18 (18.56%) were more prone to develop IDD. It was highly significant statistical association (P<0.05). Respondent of general category, 5 (20.83%), Muslim, 17 (19.76%) were more common victim of IDD. Children of illiterate mother, 7 (19.44%) were highly affected with IDD. Regarding awareness, 95% of the respondent were aware about the goitre and 89% were aware about the goitre and 89% were aware about the iodized salt. It had more significant statistical association (P<0.05). Conclusion Only 87% of respondent were consuming adequately iodized salt. Female, general category, Muslim and children of illiterate mother were more prone to develop IDD. 95% of the respondent were aware about the goitre and 89% were aware about the iodized salt.
