From Sound Waves to Bone Breaks: The Accuracy of POCUS in Long Bone Trauma

Abstract
Fracture cases are rising globally, with long bone fractures being a common presentation in trauma-related injuries. Early diagnosis in the emergency department (ED) is crucial. While X-rays are the standard imaging modality for diagnosing fractures, their use involves potential delays in a busy ED and exposes patients to ionizing radiation. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) offers a fast, radiation-free, and portable bedside alternative with proven accuracy in detecting fractures, joint effusions, and soft tissue injuries. Its portability makes it ideal even in remote areas or resource-limited settings where traditional radiography might be inaccessible or impractical. This study assesses the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of POCUS in diagnosing long bone fractures in the emergency setting. AIM AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the overall accuracy of POCUS in identifying long bone fractures in patients presenting with orthopaedic trauma. The specific objectives were to assess the diagnostic utility of POCUS, compare its accuracy with standard radiographic imaging (X-ray), and evaluate its sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing long bone fractures.
