Abstract
Background: Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral illness prevalent in India, often presenting with fever, arthralgia, and systemic symptoms. Electrolyte imbalances in such febrile illnesses may complicate clinical outcomes but are understudied. Objective: To evaluate serum electrolyte disturbances in patients with confirmed Chikungunya infection and assess their clinical correlations. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 80 patients with RT-PCR or IgM-positive Chikungunya from a tertiary care hospital in Central India. Serum levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium were measured. Associations between electrolyte abnormalities and clinical symptoms were analyzed. Results: The most common electrolyte abnormality was hyponatremia (52.5%), followed by hypocalcemia (25%) and hypokalemia (15%). Hyponatremia was significantly associated with vomiting (p = 0.03), higher arthralgia severity (p = 0.01), and prolonged duration of illness (p = 0.04). Conclusion: Electrolyte disturbances, especially hyponatremia and hypocalcemia, are common in Chikungunya patients. Routine electrolyte monitoring should be incorporated in clinical management for improved outcomes.
