Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on Awareness and Acceptability of Cervical Cancer Screening among Mothers of Medical Students at Government Medical College, Ananthapuramu: A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract
Background Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality amongst the gynaecological cancers world-wide. It is primarily a disease found in low-income countries. Out of which, nearly 85% of the cervical cancer cases are diagnosed in developing countries. Approximately 5,70,000 cases of cervical cancer and 3,11,000 deaths from the disease occurred in recent year census world-wide, India and AP. Aims and Objectives To assess effectiveness of educational intervention on awareness of cervical cancer among the study group. To assess the acceptability of cervical cancer screening after educational intervention among the study group. Methods The study is questionnaire based, cross sectional study among mothers of medical students at Government medical college, Anantapuramu for a period of 2months. Results 100 pretest and post-test questionnaire feedbacks were collected through Google form among mothers of medical students of Government Medical College, Anantapuramu. In our study 76% heard about the Cervical cancer and 67% women willing to have a Pap Smear after educational intervention. Before educational intervention only 30% knew that HPV can cause cervical cancer after educational intervention 63% people knew that HPV could cause cervical cancer. Before educational intervention only 43% aware of HPV vaccine prevents cervical cancer and after educational intervention 57% know about HPV vaccine prevents cervical cancer. Conclusion In conclusion, the research highlights, after educational intervention knowledge about cervical cancer risk factors, early age of sexual intercourse can cause cervical cancer, about cervical cancer screening and prevention of cervical cancer with HPV vaccine has increased. Barriers of screening for cervical cancer were overcame and some of them were underwent screening.
