EFFECT OF CORE STABILITY EXERCISES FOR CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN IN YOUNG BHARATANATYAM DANCERS UNDERGOING TRAINING.
Bhoomi Ajit Vora, Dr. Trupti Yadav
Abstract
Background: Bharatanatyam dancers have a high risk of having back injuries due to the superimposition of Microtrauma to the spinal muscles. Due to the overuse related to the repetitive movements of full sitting and bending forward and backwards, and the dancers have a high impact on their back. These repetitive hyperflexion and hyperextension movements when performed that aggravates the low back pain.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to find out the effect of core stability exercises on the level of pain and also on the functional activity for chronic low back pain in young Bharatanatyam dancers undergoing training.
Method: A total of 12 subjects (young dancers) were screened by assessing the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Modified Oswestry Disability Index (MODI) were approached in this study. The subjects (young dancers) were been taught the exercises online with the help of ZOOM meeting Application. Pre intervention and Post intervention assessment were taken and analyzed.
Result: The core stability exercises showed considerable significant effect on the pain and the functional activity level of the dancers having chronic low back pain. Where, the values of Pain at rest (VAS) changed from 3.275 +0.967 to 1.65 +0.676, (n=12, p=0.0005), and the values of Pain at activity (VAS) changed from 6.933 +1.068 to 4.7 +0.995, (n=12, p=0.0002). With the help of the statistical tests conducted, the results came out that there was reduced pain level in the dancers during training sessions and also that the functional activity status was improved in the dancers having chronic low back pain.
Conclusion: There is significant effect of the core stabilization exercises for chronic low back pain in young Bharatanatyam dancers along with improved core stability, decreased pain levels, and improved functional activity.
