Abstract
Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant global health concern and is becoming increasingly prevalent. It plays a crucial role in contributing to both illness and death rates. In India, 0.68% of the population suffers from some form of renal disease (excluding CKD), while 0.16% are affected by CKD. Individuals with CKD face a heightened risk of cardiac events, which escalates as the condition advances to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Objectives:
Aim:The aim is to measure Creatine Kinase-MB (CK-MB) and Troponin I levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis who have no prior history of coronary complications, to facilitate early detection of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).
Methodology: This research was a single-center, hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted in partnership with the Biochemistry, Nephrology, and Medicine Departments. The study's estimated sample size was 90 patients, divided into three groups of 30 each. The groups were: Group A - Control group, Group B - CKD patients not on hemodialysis, and Group C - CKD patients on hemodialysis.
Results: The majority, 61.1%, of the participants were aged between 45 and 60 years. When comparing the average levels of CK-MB and Troponin I across the groups, those on hemodialysis exhibited higher mean values than those not on hemodialysis.
Conclusion: There is a clear increase in CK-MB and Troponin I levels in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis without any history of coronary complications. This suggests that testing for CK-MB and Troponin I can serve as a marker for early detection of CVD in all patients undergoing hemodialysis without coronary complications.
