Background: Anemia in the older age is a major health problem in India It is not merely physiological due to aging and requires appropriate evaluation. It is an emerging global health problem for 21st century which negatively impacts quality of life. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinico-hematological spectrum of anemias in the elderly aged 60 years and above. Materials and methods: A cross sectional, descriptive study conducted over a 12-month period included 110 subjects aged 60 years and above who were diagnosed with anemia. Routine haematological investigations including peripheral blood smear examination and complete hemogram were done. RESULTS: Mean age was found to be 69.64 years. Normocytic normochromic anemia was the most frequently observed morphological type (35.45%), followed by Microcytic hypochromic anemia (30.91%). Macrocytic anemia (6.36%), which was the least common. Anemia of chronic disease was the most prevalent type, accounting for 51.81% of cases, followed by iron deficiency anemia at 26.36%. CONCLUSION: Although significant progress has been made in diagnostic techniques, anemia in the elderly remains frequently under-reported and insufficiently explored, underscoring the importance of evaluating even mild cases. Timely diagnosis and accurate classification are essential for ensuring appropriate management.
