CLINICAL EVALUATION OF INTRATHECAL FENTANYL (25 µG) AS AN ADJUVANT TO 0.5% HYPERBARIC BUPIVACAINE FOR SPINAL ANESTHESIA IN LOWER ABDOMINAL SURGERIES

Abstract

Background: Spinal anaesthetic is the preferred method for lower abdominal procedures because of its reliability, rapid onset, and cost-effectiveness. Although hyperbaric bupivacaine alone delivers sufficient surgical anaesthetic, the use of intrathecal opioids such as fentanyl can markedly improve both intraoperative and postoperative analgesia. This study assesses the therapeutic efficacy of combining 25 mcg fentanyl with 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine in 50 patients classified as ASA I-III undergoing lower abdominal operations, evaluating block characteristics, hemodynamic stability, duration of analgesia, and safety profile.
