An Overview of the Importance of Core Strength
Maman Paul, Anshu Bansal Gupta
Abstract
Research on the role of core muscles dates back to the early 1980s. Strength training of the core muscles is considered to be important in the prevention and management of various musculoskeletal conditions like low back pain etc. There has been a growing inquisitiveness in sports regarding core training and exploring the possible relationship between conditioning of core muscles and enhanced athletic capability. Elite athletes include core stability and strength training in their workout routine, even though there are conflicting results regarding the effectiveness of core training. This is largely because there isn't a gold standard way to measure core stability and strength while doing daily activities and sports activities. Another factor is that due to the varying requirements placed on the core muscles in everyday tasks (low strain, normal movements) and athletic pursuits (intense strain, resisted, dynamic motions); findings from studies conducted in the rehabilitation field may not be transferable to the athletic sphere. As a result, there is a lack of information on core training regimens for athletes and their impact on athletic performance. The anatomy involved in the course of sporting activities covers beyond the core to include the shoulders and knees, which play a critical role in transferring forces across the body for operational sports methods. This wider involvement necessitates the need to define the core for both stability and strength in a more thorough manner. Attaining a better knowledge of the precise role that core muscles play in stability and strength can apprise the development of more functional training protocols, improving the transfer of these skills to real-world sports performance.
