Background The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is a straightforward tool with three key components: the sign-in, which occurs before anaesthesia induction; the time-out, conducted before making the skin incision; and the sign-out, performed immediately after closing the incision or before moving the patient from the operating room. This simple process helps to reduce surgical complications. Our goal is to assess the operating room staff’s attitudes and knowledge regarding the surgical safety checklist, identify barriers to compliance, and enhance implementation and adherence through a brief educational session. Methodology This study was conducted among the surgical residents and operating room staff in hospitals associated with Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Mysore. Knowledge and compliance to checklist were observed and analysed before and after the educational session. Even the barriers to implementation of the checklist were assessed. Results Following an educational session, there was a notable improvement in knowledge and attitudes towards the steps of the surgical safety checklist, with the most significant progress observed in the sign-out step, specifically the “Count of sponges, needles, and instruments complete?” Despite this progress, there was no improvement in documenting the checklist in the patient file. Common barriers to effective implementation included lack of time, insufficient teamwork, and inadequate training on how to adhere to the checklist. Conclusion Adhering to the surgical safety checklist is crucial for establishing a new culture of safety. Improved compliance with the checklist is anticipated to positively impact the reduction of surgical complications, morbidity, and mortality. Additionally, it enhances teamwork skills and fosters a better departmental culture within the organization.
