A Review of the Effect of Water Pollution on the Biochemistry of Fishes

Abstract
Industrialization and growth of human population have led to a progressive deterioration in the quality of the earth environment. The aquatic habitat is polluted by xenobiotic compounds released by industrial, agricultural and urban activities. Environmental pollution can cause poisoning, disease and even death of fish and the accumulation of different pollutants on biological tissues. The absorption of heavy metal elements of various biological tissues caused alteration in haematological parameters, generated reactive oxygen species, altered genetic and protein components along with many biological markers. Consumption of toxicant accumulated fishes for longer duration might be detrimental to human health.
