A Randomized Study to Compare Different Doses of Dexmedetomidine Combined with Ropivacaine to Assess Post-Operative Analgesia Using Ultrasound-Guided Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block in Upper Limb Surgeries

Abstract
Background: Ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block is widely used for upper limb
surgeries because it provides effective anaesthesia, prolonged postoperative analgesia, stable
haemodynamics, and reduces opioid requirements. Ultrasound guidance improves block success while
minimizing complications. Ropivacaine is a long-acting local anaesthetic with lower cardiotoxicity and
neurotoxicity than bupivacaine. Dexmedetomidine, an α₂-adrenergic receptor agonist, prolongs
postoperative analgesia and improves block characteristics; however, higher doses are associated with
bradycardia and hypotension. Therefore, comparing different doses is clinically important.
