Consciousness and the Ultimate Essence of Matter

Timo Järvilehto

Abstract

It is argued in the present essay that the understanding of the ultimate essence of matter depends essentially on the conception of human consciousness. In the framework of the organism-environment theory consciousness developing with human co-operation and communication is the basis of any description of the world. It is claimed that the properties of the matter are relations created in human action/measurement. Therefore, there is no “ultimate” essence of matter, and the question "What exists?" is identical with the question "What can we know?”
