GLYCOSYLATION OF TERPENOIDS AS AN APPROACH TO IMPROVE THE BIOACTIVITY: A REVIEW

Abstract

Terpenoids have a diverse set of pharmacological applications, but their bioavailability is limited due to their poor stability, poor solubility, quick clearance, and low nature of interaction with the protein. According to the prior study, terpenoids containing the sugar moiety have better solubility and stability. Glycosylation is one of the most efficient methods for increasing terpenoids solubility and stability, as a result, pharmacological activity is also enhanced. In this review study, we focused on various glycosylation approaches to improve solubility and bioavailability for example the glycosylated compound such asgeranyl glucoside,19-O-ß-D-galactosyl-andrographolide, ß-D-glucopyranosylester, 7-O-(ß-D-mannopyranosyl) cyclonerodioland so on, shows the increased solubility and better pharmacological activities. The terpenoids need more attention to overcome their limitations, as they have a plethora of applications in human health such as, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties.
