Multiband Frequency Reconfigurable Patch Antenna for Wireless Applications Using Multiple Switching Elements

Abstract

A frequency reconfigurable antenna using three PIN diodes is presented for wireless applications. The proposed antenna has a size of 50 × 50 ×1.6 mm3. The three PIN diodes are positioned on the radiating patch and are controlled independently. Substrate material Flame Retardant-4 (FR-4) with 𝜀𝑟=4.3 and h=1.6 mm is used for the proposed design. The antenna resonates 23 different frequency bands and operates in three modes. Mode 1 has two triple bands (2.63, 4.42 & 6.6 GHz and 2.95, 4.72 & 6.64 GHz), mode 2 has three dual bands (4.82 & 6.62 GHz, 4.9 & 6.72 GHz and 4.85 & 6.59 GHz) and mode 3 has three quad bands (2.45, 4.12, 5.24 & 6.57 GHz, 2.07, 3.57, 4.86 & 6.2 GHz and 2.17, 4.23, 4.95 & 6.53 GHz). For all the resonating frequencies, the VSWR is less than 1.8, and the gain ranges from -1.84 to 6.02 dBi. CST MWS tool is used to simulate the proposed antenna structure and the simulated results are validated.
